Since it is the new year and so many people spend time making New Year’s Resolutions, I thought it would be a good time to talk about all of the different ways of saying what you’re going to do in the future.
1. Plans made before now
-BE GOING TO DO: .
Michelle: This year I’m going to join a gym
Michelle: This year I’m joining a gym.
2. Decisions made in the moment
Barack: You’re joining a gym? I’ll join too! (In this scenario, Barack didn’t know about Michelle’s plan before he spoke.)
3. Scheduled events
Michelle: OK, the gym opens at 4am tomorrow. Let’s go!
-BE GOING TO DO:
Michelle: You’ll sleep in, won’t you?
Michelle: You’re going to sleep in, aren’t you?
5.The immediate future
-BE ABOUT TO DO:
Barack: Maybe I’ll start my diet next week. I’m about to go to McDonalds in a few minutes!
